Bharatanatyam is a widely practiced style of Indian classical dance. It is a dance form that has existed for thousands of years as shown by sculptural and literary evidence. This fully evolved dance style has been revived and preserved and has given expression to many religious and historical texts.
What is an arangetram?
Arangetram literally means 'getting on stage'. A dance arangetram is a debut performance of a dance form given by a student who has trained for many years. It is a public performance that validates the efforts of the student and the teacher.
What do I wear?
There is no dress code. The host typically wears traditional Indian clothes. Indian wear or western semi-formal/business casual wear is common. Any comfortable dress that you would normally wear for a hosted dinner will work.
What do I bring?
Your presence is the greatest gift to the hosts. In some events, a non-profit cause is designated by the performer. You may choose to donate to that cause but there is no obligation to do so. Divya is dedicating her dance to Make a Wish Foundation and Akshaya Patra.
Should I stay for the whole program?
We would love for you to stay and join us for dinner after the program. However, we understand if you have to leave earlier.
How long is each dance item/the program?
Each dance item is roughly 10 minutes in duration. The "varnam" (centerpiece) is longer - closer to 25 minutes. There are short breaks between dance items. There are two larger breaks for costume changes. Overall, expect the program to last about 3 hours.
Can I bring friends, family members and children?
Most certainly. If possible, please include them in the RSVP count to help in planning.
